The Lee Leibold Collection of Squadron/Signal Artwork preserves an extraordinary piece of scale-modeling and military-art history: original paintings created by legendary artists such as Don Greer for Squadron/Signal Publications. Beginning in the 1970s, Greer’s dramatic aviation, armor, naval, and military artwork became inseparably associated with Squadron/Signal, appearing on the covers and throughout many of the company’s famous In Action, Aircraft, Armor, and other reference-book series. His original works—including paintings for subjects such as the F4U Corsair, P-47 Thunderbolt, F6F Hellcat, P-39 Airacobra, B-24 Liberator, battleships, armored vehicles, and countless other historic subjects—helped establish the distinctive visual identity generations of modelers immediately recognize as Squadron/Signal. When Squadron’s assets were auctioned in 2021, Lee Leibold acquired all of the original Squadron artwork, including Don Greer paintings. Leibold also stated at the time that the original artwork had been digitized. More than simply illustrations, these hand-painted originals represent an important intersection of military history, aviation art, scale modeling, and publishing history, preserving the artwork that inspired modelers around the world and helped make Squadron/Signal one of the most recognizable names in the hobby.
